Veysonnaz is ideally located for a range of summer and winter activities.  Here is a few of the things that you can do in this area, and some suggestions based on our own experiences.  If you have any suggestions of activities that we could include on this page, please contact us.

Skiing
Veysonnaz is part of the "4 vallées" ski area - the largest ski area in Switzerland.  Follow this link for a map of the ski area.  The ski area has over 400km of pistes and over 90 different lifts.  The highest point in the area is Mont Fort, at 3,300m.  The ski area also includes the resorts of Nendaz, La Tzoumaz, Thyon and Verbier.  The Veysonnaz gondola is a couple of minutes walk from the apartment.  Other winter activities available at Veysonnaz include cross-country skiing, winter hiking, sledging and snow-tubing.

Walking
We have written guides for some of the walking routes from the apartment that we have done, though we still have lots more to discover.

In the area surrounding Veysonnaz, there are over 300km of signposted paths.  Walking routes range from short strolls through the forest to challenging routes along mountain ridges.  The location of Veysonnaz means that any route will be guaranteed to have fantastic views.  The ancient irragation channels - the "bisses" - that this region is famous for, offer easy walking routes, but all the time through fantastic scenery.

Mountain Biking
Veysonnaz has 5 signposted mountain bike routes - from easy routes of a few miles to difficult routes that climb high into the mountains.  As well as these routes, that are lots of unsignposted tracks to discover - this site details some other routes in the area.  Bikes can be rented from the sports shops in Veysonnaz - we'll add some more details soon.  The Grand Raid Cristalp, probably the hardest mountain bike race in the world, passes through Veysonnaz in August each year.

Family days out
Within an hour's drive from Veysonnaz, there are a number of places that are ideal for a family day out.   Again,  we expect this list will get longer as we get to know the region.
  • Swiss Vapeur Parc - a minature railway park, with lots of trains, bridges, tunnels, and scale models of some of Switzerland's best know landmarks.  This is a brilliant place to visit, especially with children who like trains.  We spent most of the day here riding around on the trains and admiring the model buildings.
  • Labyrinthe Aventure - the world's largest permanent maze, with an adventure playground, minigolf and other activities thrown in for good measure.  We could easily have spent the entire day here - the maze itself takes a few hours to explore fully, and then there are lots of games and other activities to try too, including the opportunity to have a go at riding some very strange bikes.
  • Burgerbad thremal baths - a naturally heated swimming pool centre at Leukerbad, about 45 minutes drive from Veysonnaz.  There is a good play pool for children, plus a flume and when we were there there were various inflatables in the outdoor pool - a very family friendly pool.  Also, there are some very relaxing thremal baths.  The setting is spectacular - definitely worth visiting.
  • Happyland - a leisure park near to Sion that has a number of rides and attractions.  We spend a day here trying out everything - the attractions are very varied so there will definitely be something for everyone.  The mini rollercoaster was a huge hits with our children.
  • Marécottes zoo and swimming pool - an alpine zoo, with all of the famous animals of the region, and a 70 metre long heated swimming pool carved out of the rocks.
Golf
There are five golf courses within a one-hour drive of Veysonnaz.  The nearest, the Golf Club Sion, is only fifteen minutes away, and as a customer of our local rental agency, VIP, you will receive a discount on green fees.  On the other side of the Rhone valley is the Golf Club Crans-sur-Sierre, home of the PGA Swiss Open, with its two world-famous courses, and two courses for beginners.  Also nearby are the Golf Club of Sierre, the Golf Club Leuk, and the Golf Club Verbier.  This being Switzerland, you can be assured of immaculately kept courses and breathtaking scenery.

Wine tasting
Switzerland may not be as famous for it's wines as some of it's neighbours, but it does produce some world famous wines such as Dole and Fendant.  The dry, sunny climate of the area around Veysonnaz make this the most important wine producing region in Switzerland.  The lower slopes of the Rhone Valley are covered with vineyards, and there are various cellars and other wine-tasting venues that invite you to discover the wine specialities of the Valais.  There is more information about the wines of Valais here.  Giroud, one of the main producers, has a new visitor and tasting centre on the road from Sion to Veysonnaz.

Other places to visit
When we first visited the Valais region, we were suprised by just how much there was to see and do.  Here are a few places that we know about that we think are worth visiting, and as we spend more time in this region we are sure that this list will quickly get longer.
  • Sion - the capital of the Valais is just fifteen minutes from Veysonnaz.   Famous for the two châteaus that overlook the city, Sion has a well conserved ancient part of the city, and a vibrant, modern centre.
  • Saillon - the thermal baths at Saillon, only thirty minutes from Veysonnaz, are the perfect place to relax while on holiday.
  • St-Léonard underground lake - the largest underground lake in Europe.  Guided tours take visitors onto the lake - a real natural wonder.
  • The Grand Dixence Dam - the highest dam in Europe.  There are tours inside the dam, and a cable car to the top of the dam.  The dam is at the head of the Val d'Herens, one of the most unspoilt valleys in Switzerland.
